Comics and graphic novels are increasingly popular college texts in English, Women's Studies, or History classrooms. While many instructors ask their students read and engage with graphic narratives, fewer instructors tend to assign them. This Petcha Kutcha presentation covers a semester-long comic creation project for college composition students In it, I discuss the structure of the assignment sequence, including the important scaffolding steps needed for the creation of a successful comic. This leads into a conversation about the unique skills comic projects can build in multimodal composition settings. Finally, I argue that a large comic assignment helps students develop their visual literacy and critical thinking skills through active learning.
